IGOHR Strongly Denounces Deadly Car Explosion in Baghdad, Iraq 20 February 2017

The International Gulf Organization for Human Rights (IGOHR) vehemently denounces a deadly terrorist car bomb attack in Iraqi’s capital Baghdad. IGOHR calls for the immediate investigation and prosecution of the organizers and perpetrators of this cruel act as it is against international human rights principles.

The incident which took place in a car dealer market in the south of Baghdad, claimed the lives of at least 55 innocent civilians and left scores of other wounded. The notorious militant group ISIL claimed responsibility of the attack which targeted car dealerships in the neighborhood of Bayaa.

IGOHR condemns in its strongest terms possible this horrific terrorist attack and describes it as totally unacceptable in a country already facing numerous crisis. The organization deems such attack as inhumane and threatens not only the peace and political stability of Iraq but also international peace and security. It is equally a gross violation of international treaties and humanitarian laws which prohibits acts of terrorism and extremism. The Terrorist Bombings Convention 1997 describes terrorist or suicide bombings as “the unlawful and intentional use of explosives in public places with intention to kill, to injure or to cause extensive destruction to compel a government or an international organization to do or to abstain from doing some act.” The convention equally urges its member states to take measures to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of such terrorist acts.

Since the beginning of this year, ISIL has carried out a series of terrorist attacks and suicide bomb explosions in many cities in Iraq which has resulted in the deaths of dozens of civilians and injuring several others. The International Gulf Organization reiterates that these occurrences perpetrated by this extremist group instigate fear and lack of security of person in the country. It causes people to constantly live in fear.

Therefore, IGOHR calls on the Iraqi government to promptly investigate the recent bombings and to hold accountable all organizers, perpetrators and financiers of these horrible acts and to bring to justice. IGOHR further calls on the international community represented by the United nations and the UN Security Council to work collaboratively with Iraqi authorities to assist them to end the ongoing conflict and violence as well as help restore political stability and peace in the country. IGOHR also extends its sincere sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Iraqi government and people.
